1970 Pro Stock Season
Drag Sport Illustrators
‘Pro Stock Action Out of The Past.’
Back in the early days of Pro Stock, before it was filled with Cavaliers and Monte Carlos, drivers used 427" COPO and ZL-1-based Camaros to compete in this exciting, new heads-up doorslammer ranks. These special cars, when under the controls of the likes of Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, Wally Booth, Sox & Martin, Dyno "Don" Nicholson, "fast Eddie" Schartman, Dick Brannan, Hubert Platt, Don Carlton, Dick Landy, Arlen Vanke and even funny car legend Dick Harrell, were at the cutting edge of racing technology, yet were much closer to the street cars enthusiasts drove every day.
Thanks to musclecar diecast company Lil Detroit of St. Paul, Minn., and photo archive Match Race Madness of Santa Ana, Calif., it is now possible to see those primitive pro Stock entries in action again. The first annual pictorial from Drag Sport Illustrators, "Pro Stock Action out of the Past: A Pictorial of 1970," focuses on the 1970 season in NHRA, AHRA and match race competition, using over 100 photos from some of the greatest photographers in racing history. These action-packed images include the biggest factory names and many independent racers of the day, complete with in-depth captioning by motorsports historians Al Kirschenbaum and Geoff Stunkard. As a special feature, 18 photos in full color are shown on the four cover panels.
This doorslammer tribute has a limited press of run of 3000 copies, and is available for immediate delivery from ----- Match Race Madness, P.O. Box 15362, Santa Ana, CA., 92735. Ph: 714-547-6004, E-Mail:mrm@match-race-madness.com.
